His rarest work Many of CWL’s books are still widely available today, while others are rare, and some are even extremely rare. I’ve recently come across one of his works that is so rare that hardly anyone is even aware of its existence: This first edition consists of two volumes containing 54 issues of an English-language journal titled The Buddhist: The English Organ of the Southern Church of Buddhism, published by CWL in 1890. The publisher was The Colombo Theosophical Society, Colombo, Ceylon, and the issues were printed in Ceylon, now known as Sri Lanka. The copies are from the collection of the Library Association of Portland and include, among other things, a translation of the Dhammapada by Sir Edwin Arnold. |
The two volumes were offered for sale together at a general antiquarian bookshop, at a hefty price:
